Local Government Employees' Pension Fund
The Local Government Employees' Pension Fund in Iceland, known as Brú Pension Fund, is a pension fund specifically for municipality employees, requiring compulsory membership for those associated with the Associations of Academics (BHM), the Federation of State and Municipal Employees (BSRB), and the Icelandic Teachers' Union (KÍ), managing three main divisions: Division A for employees under collective agreements with BSRB, BHM, and KÍ, with automatic membership for those employed since July 1, 1998; Division V, which is open to all and offers comparable rights to general pension funds, allowing members of Division A to transfer; and Division B, established in 2013 following the merger of five closed municipal pension funds, with more funds joining in 2017 and 2018; the fund is jointly governed by representatives from the founding parties, allowing all members to participate in annual general meetings and propose operational changes, while overseeing the operations of the Reykjavík Employee Pension Fund since June 1999 and managing the Lífeyrissjóður starfsmanna Reykjavíkurborgar since June 1, 1999, which was originally founded in 1930 and closed to new members on July 1, 1998; established on July 28, 1998, through an agreement among the key labor unions and the Icelandic Association of Local Authorities, Brú Pension Fund plays a vital role in Iceland's pension system, providing retirement and disability pensions to municipal employees and reflecting the collective bargaining agreements that shaped its formation.
